Jacksonville, FL—The Navy apologized to a homeowner after an expendable sonar system, technically known as a sonobuoy, dropped through the roof of a Mandarin residence. The aviation-related incident occurred on Friday, May 21, 2010, as reported by News4Jax.com.

At approximately 9 a.m., the sonobuoy was accidentally ejected from a P-3 Orion naval aircraft. It consequently smashed through the roof of the home, ripped through the drywall of the ceiling and landed on a bedroom floor. The bedroom belonged to an unidentified 23-year-old female and was luckily unoccupied at the time.

According to information provided, 61-year-old Marwan Saman and his wife were situated in a room of the home when they heard the commotion. Saman apparently thought a bomb had been detonated, noting, “I was scared. I didn’t know what to think. It was about 3 feet long with wires coming out.”

Saman’s neighbor, Mike Mickler, allegedly witnessed the incident as he mowed his lawn. “The P-3’s fly over routinely every three or four minutes. You don’t even look up and notice them. But this one came by, and all of a sudden—Bam—you hear this noise.”

It was not stated what might have caused the submarine tracking device to dislodge from the aircraft and crash into the home. While no one was injured during the episode, investigations are expected to be underway.
