Grand Rapids, MI—A deadly motorcycle collision occurred on Saturday, May 15, 2010 along U.S. Route 31 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A motorcyclist sustained traumatic injuries which proved fatal the following day, according to information provided by WoodTV.com.

Reports indicate a father and son, both on separate motorcycles, were traveling along U.S. 31 at the time. They were allegedly en route to the Blessing of the Bikes, an event in Baldwin, Michigan.

Battle Creek resident 59-year-old Dennis Vanwinkle was traveling behind his son David Youmans, when the accident occurred. Vanwinkle’s bike reportedly rear-ended Youmans’ motorcycle, causing it to careen across the roadway and smash into a guardrail. Vanwinkle was ejected on impact.

Youmans managed to maintain control of his cycle. He did not suffer any injuries in the motorcycle crash. The collision happened at approximately 11:20 a.m.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel responded to the scene of the wreck, located in close proximity to Leonard Street. Vanwinkle was transported to Spectrum Health hospital for treatment. However, the serious injuries he sustained proved fatal the next day. An autopsy was expected.

Reports did not indicate whether a full probe into the fatal motorcycle accident was underway.
