Los Angeles, CA—A teenager was hospitalized following a freak accident at a community center over the weekend. The 15-year-old boy was impaled by a javelin at the Westmont Park Community Center in the 1800 block of 9th Street in Pomona on Sunday, May 9, 2010, as reported by KTLA.

According to officials, a group of teenage boys apparently found a javelin in some bushes at the community center. The 15-year-old reportedly threw the javelin upon finding it and then subsequently ran to retrieve it after it became stuck in the ground. As the teen was running, he tripped, causing the javelin to pierce the right side of his body.

Pomona police officers said the javelin entered near his hip and exited through his buttocks. The teenager immediately fell to his knees, and screamed for help, yanking the spear from his side. Witnesses reported that the boy appeared to be in shock.

Responding paramedics immediately airlifted the boy to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries. The teen is reportedly in stable condition at this time.

No one was cited or arrested for the accident, even though a police report was taken. A full investigation is underway.
