Wayne County, IL—Six teenagers were injured after an SUV rollover crash occurred in Wayne County, Illinois. The single-vehicle accident happened at approximately 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2010, as reported by KFVS12.com.

According to Illinois State Police (ISP) officials, a 16-year-old female motorist was operating a 1997 Ford Explorer when the wreck occurred. The sport utility vehicle was traveling eastbound on County Road 425 and approaching U.S. Route 45 around 9 p.m.

As the driver continued towards the intersection, the SUV’s brakes allegedly locked up. As a result, the vehicle was sent careening across the highway. The SUV consequently slammed into an embankment, overturning on impact.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel seemingly responded to the accident scene to transport those injured to area hospitals. The novice driver and her five teenage passengers were all transported to Fairfield Memorial Hospital via ambulance. Their injuries were deemed to be minor.

The SUV driver was ticketed for “failure to secure a child”.

Statistics collected through the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), indicate there were 1,043 crash-induced fatalities in Illinois during the year 2008. Of these fatalities, 604 reportedly occurred during single-vehicle accidents. It was also reported that 244 of these fatalities were related to rollover wrecks.
