Macomb, IL—A Western Illinois University baseball player was tragically killed when his motorcycle collided with a sport utility vehicle. The deadly motorcycle crash occurred in Macomb, Illinois on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, according to information provided by WGEM.com.

WIU student Devin VanBrooker, 21, was reportedly operating a motorcycle eastbound on West Jackson Street when the lethal accident occurred. As the motorcycle traveled along the roadway, an SUV driven by Shameka Beard-McAllister made a left turn. The motorcycle consequently smashed into the SUV, ejecting VanBrooker and his passenger, Whitley Klingler, on impact.

While emergency medical services (EMS) crews responded to the 500 block of West Jackson, VanBrooker unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was pronounced dead at 11:50 p.m. Klingler apparently suffered a fractured arm and leg in the accident and had to be flown to a hospital in Peoria for treatment.

It was not stated if Beard-McAllister sustained any injuries in the motorcycle vs. SUV wreck. However, the driver was issued a citation for her failure to yield while turning left.

While in his senior year at Southeastern High School (2007), VanBrooker was an all-state pitcher. According to his high school baseball coach Dave Swisegood, “All the homeruns he hit, all the shutouts he threw, that was great, but not half as much as being the person he’d become.”

The Western Illinois University vs. Bradley University baseball game, scheduled for Wednesday, was cancelled in light of the fatal motorcycle accident.
