Legal News for Michigan Auto Accident Attorneys. A 2-year-old girl suffered fatal injuries when a drunk driver smashed into the pickup truck she was occupying.
Detroit, MI—A brutal two-vehicle crash left a motorist in critical condition and resulted in the tragic death of an infant on Thursday, April 29, 2010. The motor vehicle collision (MVC) involved a car, whose driver was found to be intoxicated at the time, and a pickup truck and occurred on the west side of Detroit, Michigan, according to information provided by ClickOnDetroit.com.
Reports stated a westbound blue Neon was speeding along Atkinson Street when it ran a stop sign and consequently became involved in a violent collision with a southbound Ford pickup truck. The Ford, which had been traveling on 14th street at the time, ricocheted into a tree upon being struck by the car. A 2-year-old girl was also ejected approximately 50 feet after the pickup struck the tree. The child reportedly landed underneath a vehicle.
Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel responded to the scene to transport those injured to area hospitals for treatment. The child was taken to Henry Ford Hospital where she succumbed to her severe injuries. The 23-year-old male driver of the Neon was also transported to Henry Ford Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The pickup truck driver’s condition was not specified. Authorities did not identify any of the victims’ involved in the wreck.
According to Peggy Quinn, who heard the crash and saw the critically injured infant, “She was like a lifeless rag doll, with arms flailing. It was just awful.” According to news coverage, although the child was sitting in a car seat at the time, she was not strapped in.
Toxicology tests indicated the stop sign-running driver of the Neon had a 0.21 blood alcohol level when the unfortunate collision occurred. Police also apparently discovered a bag of marijuana in his vehicle and noted that he had been driving nearly 70 mph on a suspended license.
Charges are expected.
