Floyd County, IN—Two people lost their lives after the plane they were occupying crashed in southern Indiana on Sunday night, May 2, 2010. The deadly aviation accident occurred as the plane was reportedly en route to Bowman Field airport in Louisville, Kentucky, according to information provided by WLKY.com.

Indiana State Police (ISP) reported a Piper aircraft went down at approximately 8 p.m. Sunday. Witness accounts indicate the plane spiraled out of control before crashing into a field located in close proximity to the Horseshoe Casino.

Air traffic controllers apparently received reports that the plane could have been downed in the Ohio River or in a field near the casino. The controllers subsequently asked the WLKY NewsChopper to keep a look out for a downed plane. Eventually, someone aboard the helicopter, which was being used to cover flooding in the area, apparently discovered the damaged aircraft in a field. After the wreckage was found, officials and rescue personnel rushed to the scene.

According to witness Linda Bowman, “I was leaving work and I looked up and I saw something white and it just all of the sudden started corkscrewing and going toward the river and I though at first it was just a toy plane and then I got up here and realized it was a plane.”

While the Piper aircraft allegedly remained intact, excluding the detachment of a piece of the plane’s propeller, which apparently struck a nearby vehicle, two people aboard the plane unfortunately succumbed to severe injuries sustained in the plane wreck. The victim’s identities have not been released.

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to conduct a full probe into what might have caused the plane to spiral out of control and crash into the Indiana field.
