Lake Forest, IL (News)—A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metra train in Oak Forest, Illinois on Monday, March 1, 2010. The tragic collision occurred at approximately 4:25 p.m., according to information provided by the Chicago Sun-Times.

A Metra spokesperson reported the Metra Rock Island District train No. 407 headed towards the Oak Forest station when the incident occurred. The locomotive allegedly hit an unidentified victim who suffered severe injuries on impact, which seemingly proved fatal at the scene. It was not stated whether or not emergency medical services (EMS) crews were dispatched to the scene of the train-related accident. The train was reported en route to Joliet, Illinois and was scheduled to arrive there at 5:01 p.m. Preliminary accident investigations delayed the trip beyond 4:45 p.m. and it was allegedly unknown how much longer the locomotive would remain at a standstill. Metra and Oak Forest police department officials are investigating the railroad accident.

According to the statistics provided by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) http://www.fra.dot.gov through Operation Lifesaver, there were 147 highway-rail collisions in Illinois during the year 2008. Among those collisions, 26 victims were killed while 60 other victims sustained injuries. Throughout the nation, there were 2,391 highway-rail collisions, resulting in 286 casualties and 935 injuries.
