Memphis, TN—A man was fatally injured after he fell off of a dune-buggy type vehicle and smacked his head on the ground. The man fell while riding in the Bartlett Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 5, 2009, when the vehicle made a U-turn, as reported by The Commercial Appeal.

Shriners member, Sam Leeper, 49, of Bartlett, was reportedly riding as a passenger on a dune-buggy type vehicle in the Christmas parade when he suddenly fell off and was fatally injured. The vehicle was apparently the lead vehicle in the caravan when it made a U-turn to move to the back of the pack, when Leeper fell off and hit his head on the hard ground. Leeper was rushed by emergency medical services (EMS) crews to Regional Medical Center at Memphis for treatment of his serious injuries by doctors and nurses. His injuries proved fatal on Sunday, when medical professionals pronounced him dead. The Barlett Mayor stated the city will review its safety procedures for the event to ensure no other unfortunate tragedies will occur.
