Mansfield, TX—Former Mansfield Independent School District (ISD) superintendent tragically died in motorcycle crash, leaving his wife critically injured on Wednesday July 22, 2009. The motorcycle accident occurred on Highway 50 near Geddes, South Dakota around 6 p.m., as reported by the Dallas Morning News.

Vernon Newsom, 61, of Mansfield was reportedly riding a 2006 Honda Gold Wing on Highway 50 when he attempted to pass a truck in front of him. The truck started to turn while Newsome was trying to pass the truck. In a desperate attempt to avoid a collision with the truck, Newsome drove his motorcycle into a ditch and rolled the bike. The South Dakota Highway Patrol stated, Newsom’s wife, Sharon Newsom, 62, was riding on the back of the motorcycle and is reportedly suffering from life-threatening injuries.

According to the Forth Worth Star-Telegram, Newsome recently retired from the position of Mansfield Independent School District superintendent in June. He worked with the school district since 1996.
