EPA confirms Washington’s Sumas River flows to Canada carrying asbestos.

Whatcom County, WA–The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) http://www.epa.gov recently determined there is naturally occurring asbestos free flowing in Washington’s Sumas River. Apparently, the hillside above Swift Creek dumped large amounts of the asbestos into the riverbed during the January 2009 floods, as reported by KOMONews. The flooding washed asbestos out of the riverbed into the Sumas River which flows to Canada. Apparently the hill above Swift Creek contains naturally occurring asbestos and has been washing away for 50 years.

The Whatcom County Swift Creek riverbed contains naturally occurring asbestos, which the federal government has determined to be a toxic chemical and a known carcinogen to humans and wildlife. Naturally occurring asbestos can cause numerous debilitating illnesses and diseases like mesothelioma lung cancer. When people are exposed to asbestos and asbestos containing materials they may start to experience numerous symptoms which can be a precursor to debilitating and even fatal asbestos related illnesses and diseases. If you have been exposed to asbestos you may want to seek medical attention if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:

-Persistent dry or raspy cough (typically non-productive, meaning there is little or no phlegm)
-Night sweats or fever
-Unexplained weight loss of 10 percent or more
-Fatigue
-Persistent pain in the chest or rib area, or painful breathing
-Shortness of breath (dyspnea) that occurs even when at rest
-The appearance of lumps under the skin on the chest
-Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
-Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia)

If you or someone you know is concerned about primary or secondary exposure to asbestos or asbestos containing materials you may want to see your medical doctor for a full evaluation and screening even if you have no symptoms. Contacting a Washington mesothelioma cancer attorney may help you or your family recover from the damages and injuries related to asbestos exposure.
