Headline – Philadelphia Car Accident Lawyer Rand Spear Says – Insurance Companies Protect Their Own Interests, Not Yours, After an Accident

What’s the best way to handle an insurance company after you’ve been injured in an accident? With the help of an attorney, says Philadelphia’s accident lawyer, Rand Spear in a new Google hangout available on YouTube. If an accident victim makes a statement to an insurance company or signs any kind of form, they may be hurting their own interests because they don’t fully understand the situation without first obtaining legal advice.

The most important thing an accident victim can do to protect his or her legal rights is to call an attorney before talking to an insurance company adjuster or attorney. “Speak with an attorney. Learn about your legal rights, what you should be doing, what you should not be doing,” Spear says, “Make a call, feel comfortable that you know the details, you know the law, then you can protect yourself.”

The reason to be guarded when dealing with an insurance company is that it’s a business. “They’re not necessarily going to be on your side. They have their own side. They’re looking to save money,” Spear warns, ”You should be very careful with what you say to them.”

This includes allowing telephone conversations to be recorded or signing any documents an insurance company provides you. “You could say something that becomes a part of your permanent record that’s detrimental to your case,” Spear advises, “It’s always best to speak with an attorney and have legal representation when you’re dealing with an insurance company.”

“You should never sign any document without first consulting with a lawyer. You need to understand what the documents say. It could be a release. You could be completely giving up or terminating your claim to monetary compensation for either pain and suffering or property damage, so make sure you have a lawyer review the documents so you know exactly what you’re giving up.”

Spear suggests accident victims be careful what they say to anyone, not just someone representing an insurance company, “It’s always best to keep it private. It’s really no one’s business but your business.” He states those you talk to may offer advice based on their experience, but if the person’s not an experienced personal injury attorney, you could get the wrong advice.

“It’s important after any type of accident to make a phone call, speak with an attorney and find out what’s right for you based on the particulars of your accident,” Spear says.
