Washington – The Supreme Court has ruled that 19 abortion clinics in Texas can remain open, as an ongoing legal battle over their closure looms. According to an Associated Press report, the justices voted 5-4 in favor of granting an emergency appeal from the establishments after new regulations were upheld by a federal appeals court.

The order of the high court will reportedly remain effective until a decision is made on whether to hear the appeal of the lower court ruling filed by the clinics no earlier than the fall.

Some suggest that the court’s decision is indicative that the full appeal of the clinics will be heard, marking what could be the biggest case concerning abortions heard by the Supreme Court in more than two decades.

Prior to the enforcement of new regulations in the state of Texas, 41 abortion clinics were open. The number has been reduced to 19 since the restrictions were put into place.
