Washington – A suicide note posted on Tumblr by transgender teen Leelah Alcorn has garnered the attention of the Obama Administration. A petition was sent to the White House asking that the administration consider Alcorn’s story in an effort to push for legislation that would ban the use of conversion therapy. Alcorn reportedly walked in from of a semi-truck ending her life. In her Tumblr post, she stated her parents forced her to undergo conversion therapy in an effort to change her gender identity. As stated by WebProNews, the White House has responded to the petition, which has received 121,000 supporters. The petition states, “Conversion therapies’ have been documented to cause great harms and in this case, Leelah’s death. Therapists that engage in the attempt to brainwash or reverse any child’s gender identity or sexual orientation are seriously unethical and legislation is needed to end such practices that are resulting in LGBTQ+ deaths. We respectfully seek your help to ban the practice known as ‘conversion therapy’ and name the bill in honor of Leelah Alcorn.” White House Senior Advisor Melanie Jarrett has stated in response to the petition, “We share your concern about its potentially devastating effects on the lives of transgender as well as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and queer youth… As part of our dedication to protecting America’s youth, this Administration supports efforts to ban the use of conversion therapy for minors.” Justice News Flash delivers the latest in Government News.
