Joplin, Missouri – A Missouri couple who won a $20 million judgment for health injuries linked to exposure to a popcorn flavoring ingredient have filed for bankruptcy. As reported by Good Morning America, the couple, Eric and Cassandra Peoples, who made headlines in 2004 after being awarded $20 million combined in a lawsuit for Eric’s workplace exposure to diacetyl, filed a bankruptcy petition last month.

As noted in the report, diacetyl, which is a chemical used to provide the buttery flavoring and aroma of popcorn, has been stated to cause a potentially life-threatening, reversible, type of obstructive lung disease referred to as “popcorn lung” or what is formally called Bronchiolitis obliterans.

It was reportedly not known what portion of the verdict the Peoples’ had received, due to a percentage being provided for other injured plant workers.
