Wauwatosa, WI — An 11-year-old boy was killed while walking to school in suburban Milwaukee Monday morning, February 27, 2012, when he was hit by a freight train at about 7:25 a.m., reported the Green Bay Press Gazette.

The Wauwatosa Police Department reported that the boy was crossing the tracks alone when the train hit him.

The boy was only identified as a sixth-grader at Longfellow Middle School in Wauwatosa.

Responding emergency crews rushed the boy to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead 30 minutes later.

The crew of the 32-car train reportedly sounded the bells and whistle, and applied the emergency brake, but the train was unable to stop in time. It takes about a mile for a freight train to come to a stop.

The railroad crossing gate and lights were functional at the time of the accident.

Police say there was no evidence of negligence.

The train was headed to Chicago from Minneapolis at the time of the accident.

Investigations are underway.
