Dulles, VA β€” A Southwest Airlines employee is dead after being involved in an accident with a baggage cart at Dulles International Airport. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 7 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2012, reported the Washington Post.

The Southwest Airlines employee was reportedly driving a baggage cart on the tarmac near the B course when it collided with a Dulles people mover.

The identity of the Southwest Airlines employee has not been made public at this time.

Responding emergency crews airlifted the employee to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of internal injuries.

No passengers on the people mover were injured in the wreck.

Southwest Airlines release a statement regarding the accident: β€œOn Thursday, Jan. 26, at approximately 7am, a Southwest Employee was involved in a collision between a baggage cart and a mobile lounge at Washington Dulles Airport. Immediately following the accident, the injured Employee was rushed to an area hospital to receive medical attention. We learned earlier today, Friday, Jan. 27, that the Employee passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. We continue to work with all relevant agencies, including the local authorities and the airport, to investigate events surrounding the accident. The Southwest Airlines Family is greatly saddened by the passing of our Southwest Family Member, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies and support to his entire family at this time.”

Police are continuing to investigate the accident.
