Verona, WI — Eleven people were rushed to the hospital after an inmate transport van hit a tractor-trailer and crashed on U.S. 18-151. The traffic accident occurred Tuesday morning, January 17, 2012, around 6 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway, near County PB, reported Madison.com.

According to reports, the semi-truck lost control on the slick highway, causing it to slide around. The privately-owned prisoner transport van then struck the semi-truck’s trailer. The semi then hit the median, while the van veered into the right shoulder.

There were 10 inmates and two guards in the transport van at the time of the crash. Nine of those inmates and the two guards were “slightly injured” in the wreck, which consisted mainly of “bumps and bruises.”

Ambulances from Fitchrona EMS, Belleville, the city of Madison, town of Madison, Middleton, Mount Horeb and Oregon all responded to the scene.

The westbound lanes of U.S. 18-151 were shut down until 8:10 a.m.

Investigations into the semi-truck and van collision are underway.
