Nevada City, CA — A wood chipper accident left a man dead Thursday, January 12, 2012, when he somehow got caught in the machine and was decapitated. The victim was removing tree branches and other debris from a home along Indian Shack Road at the time of the accident, in a rural area outside Nevada City, reported Fox40.com.
Although police have not publicly identified the victim, friends of the victim revealed it was 50-year-old Martin Lara from Applegate.
Lara was reportedly using a large wood chipper, while handling very large pieces of wood when the rope must have become stuck while feeding something into the chipper. The rope then wrapped around Lara’s neck and decapitated him.
It is believed that the rope must have become tangled in brush he was chipping, when it was sucked into the machine with such force that it was nearly impossible to get out of, especially if he didn’t have his hand on the shut-off switch, Fox 40 reported.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Department says Lara’s death appears to be an accident. Investigations are ongoing.
