New Haven, CT — A U-Haul truck ran over three women at the Yale Bowl tailgating area Saturday, November 19, 2011, killing one woman. The truck suddenly accelerated for unknown reasons in Lot D before the start of the Yale-Harvard football game, reported the Chicago Tribune.

According to New Haven police officials, the driver of the U-Haul truck, Brandon J. Ross, was turning off Central Avenue into a parking lot that was being used for pre-football game tailgating when it suddenly accelerated, and ran over three women. The truck continued to drive forward where it crashed into other U-Haul vans that were parked in the lot, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Responding emergency crews rushed to the scene and immediately began administering CPR on a 30-year-old Massachusetts woman, Nancy Barry, of Salem. She was then taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead at 10:16 a.m.

A second victim and Yale student, Sarah Short, 30, of New Haven, was also hospitalized with a third victim, Elizabeth Dernbach of Florida. Dernbach was treated and released at Hospital of St. Raphael’s.

Short reportedly sustained broken bones and is listed in serious but stable condition at this time.

Police have determined that Ross was not under the influence of alcohol, as he passed a field sobriety test.

The U-Haul was reportedly transporting several beer kegs at the time of the wreck.

“As of yet, no criminal charges have been filed against Ross,” New Haven police said in a statement. “The outcome of the Forensic Investigation into the U-haul truck and its mechanics, and the review of witness’ statements, is required before the investigation can move towards a conclusion.”

A full investigating into the fatal collision is underway. The Yale Athletics and the Yale College Dean’s Office is reviewing the policies and regulations regarding tailgating before athletic events in the wake of this deadly accident.
