Coal Miner Killed in Workplace Accident at Letcher County Mine

Letcher County, KY — A workplace accident killed a coal miner Monday, November 7, 2011, at an underground mine in Letcher County. The fatal mining accident occurred around 9:40 a.m. at Hubble Mining Co.’s Number 9 mine, reported The Courier-Journal.
According to reports, coal miner Jerry Britton, 47, of Pound, Virginia was killed when he was hit by a personnel carrier in the underground mine.
It is unknown at this time what caused Britton to be struck by the carrier.
Responding emergency crews rushed Britton to Whitesburg Regional Hospital where his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The mine has since been closed while investigations are ongoing.
Since August 2010 when Hubble began operating the mine, they have been cited for 11 safety violations. But no accidents have been reported until Monday’s fatal accident.
