Texas Oil Rig Explosion Injures 2 in Karnes County

Falls City, TX — An oil rig explosion in Karnes County has hospitalized two people on Thursday, September 22, 2011. The explosion occurred at an Amerril Energy Co.-owned rig, on the Eagle Ford shale near FM 887 and County Road 229, just before noon in Falls City, reported the San Antonio Express.
According to officials, a truck driver was transferring 45 barrels of hot oil into the well, when the backflow caused a fire on the truck, which also ignited the explosion.
The truck driver sustained second and third-degree burns and was rushed to an area hospital. Two people were injured as a result of the fire and explosion.
Officials reported that one person was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, while another was flown to a San Antonio hospital. Authorities could not confirm who was taken to which hospital.
The Railroad Commission, the Karnes County Sheriff’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the workplace accident.
The well belongs to Amerril Energy LLC of Houston, and the hot-oil truck is owned by Texas Hot Oilers Inc. of Giddings, reported Texas Railroad Commission spokeswoman Ramona Nye.
