Raleigh, NC — A single-vehicle accident killed a 10-month-old girl when her mother’s SUV overturned and landed on top of the baby, who was ejected from her car seat. The fatal automobile accident occurred on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at around 11 a.m., on Lake Wheeler Road near Penny Road, reported WRAL.

According the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 24-year-old Heather Lucas was driving her 1993 Ford Explorer on Lake Wheeler Road when she lost control and over-corrected, causing her vehicle to roll twice and hit a tree in a roadside ditch.

The 10-month-old baby, Sophia Peetc, was thrown from her car seat during the wreck, who was then killed instantly when the SUV landed upside-down on top of the baby.

“The infant was under the vehicle,” Sgt. Kevin Shallington of the state Highway Patrol said to WRAL. “It’s a tragedy.”

Highway Patrol reported that the car seat wasn’t properly secured in the backseat. The car seat straps holding Sophia were too loose.

Responding emergency crews rushed Lucas to WakeMed for treatment of injuries. Lucas’ injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the automobile accident.

Preliminary investigations noted that speed did not appear to be a factor. But, the automobile accident is still under investigation.
