Poughkeepsie, NY — A bus accident in Westchester County injured five third-grade students who were on a field trip with Krieger Elementary School Wednesday afternoon, June 8, 2011. The bus accident occurred at 2:48 p.m., on Saw Mill River Road near the Interstate 287 entrance ramp in Elmsford, reported the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Investigators reported that the charter bus was hit by a tractor-trailer, which lost its brakes, causing it to hit the bus filed with 35 people. The tractor-trailer lost its brakes while coming down the ramp off I-287 and “T-boned” the side of the charter bus.

Five students on the bus complained of injuries to responding emergency medical crews and were taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. Officials reported that the victims were not seriously hurt. The students were treated and released.

The drivers of the tractor-trailer and the charter bus were not injured in the wreck.

The bus accident occurred as the charter bus was returning from a field trip to the Bronx Zoo.

A full investigation into the bus accident is underway.
