Houston, TX—The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and police officials are trying to determine why an automated tram at the Bush Intercontinental Airport hit two men working along the track on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 11:30 a.m., as reported by the Houston Chronicle.

One worker was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was airlifted to Memorial Herman Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

It is unknown what the men were doing, but Marlene McClinton, a spokeswoman for the Houston Airport System said, “At this point we don’t know what was going on the track, what they were doing, but they were performing their duties.” McClinton noted the employees might have been surveying or doing maintenance work on the tracks at the time.

Officials said the tram is controlled by computer software and is monitored by video surveillance as it makes its way around the 1-mile track. The accident occurred between the Marriott Hotel and Terminal B. There reportedly was no indication that the track was being monitored when the deadly accident occurred.

The identities of the victims are being withheld. PBS&J Weber Construction employed the victims.

There reportedly was two United Airlines workers on the two-car tram at the time of the accident, but they were uninjured.

The operator of the tram, Johnson Controls Inc., is “cooperating with the investigation of the tragic accident.” It is unknown how fast the tram was traveling at the time. It can reach speeds up to 33 mph.

OSHA and Houston Police are investigating.
