Charlotte, NC—Electrolux Home Products Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled Frigidaire and Electrolux ICON Smoothtop Electric Cooktops and Frigidaire Slide-in Ranges with rotary knobs and digital displays due to fire and burn hazards they pose. The CPSC announced the product safety recall, which affects approximately 122,000 units, on Thursday, October 21, 2010.
According to the CPSC news release, “Liquids can pool under the control knob and cause the surface heating element to turn on unexpectedly, heat to temperatures other than expected and then not turn off, posing a risk of fire and burn hazards to consumers.”
Though Electrolux has only received three reports of minor burns resultant of the defective products, the Charlotte-based manufacturer was informed of 67 other incident reports. Three of those reports alleged fires were sparked, consequently resulting in property damage.
The defective product recall affects Frigidaire and Electrolux ICON Smoothtop Electric Cooktops and Frigidaire Slide-in Ranges with rotary knobs and digital displays with the following model and serial numbers:

The potentially dangerous Frigidaire and Electrolux ICON Smoothtop Electric Cooktops and Frigidaire Slide-in Ranges were made available for purchase at mass merchandise and independent retail stores between January 2005 and August 2010. They cost between $500 and $2,500.
Consumers have been advised to cease use of and unplug the recalled ranges or power off cooktops at the circuit breaker. Consumers may contact Electrolux at (888) 281-5310 Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. to find out how to receive a complimentary repair kit.
