Product Recall: Similac Powered Infant Formula May Contain Beetles

New York, NY—Certain Similac-brand powdered infant formula has been recalled over the possible presence of a beetle. Abbott Laboratories announced the recall on Wednesday, September 23, 2010, which recalled approximately 5 million cans of the infant formula, reported CNN.
If the beetle were to be ingested, it could cause discomfort and irritate the gastrointestinal tract, which could cause the infant to lose their appetite. The presence of the small, common beetle was found in the formula, was produced at a manufacturing facility in Sturgis, Michigan.
The recall includes certain Similac powder product lines that come in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce, and 12.9-ounce cans.
Company spokeswoman Melissa Brotz stated, “Parents place a lot of trust in Similac, and delivering anything less than the highest quality formula is unacceptable to us. That’s why we’re initiating the recall.”
The recall involves products in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean.
