St. Joseph, MO—A training exercise tragically turned fatal when a police officer was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer on Wednesday afternoon, September 15, 2010. The officer was reportedly shot around 2:15 p.m., at the Neely School, as reported by KMBC.

Five-year St. Joseph Police Department officer, Dan Kraai, 35, was taking part in a training exercise when a fellow officer’s gun discharged as they were leaving the training exercise.

Officials reported that there was no live rounds used in the exercise, but while the officers were retrieving their service weapons after returning from a break, one of the guns fired, hitting Kraai in his back.

Kraai was rushed to Heartland Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A full investigation is underway. The officer involved in the shooting has been put on administrative leave until the investigations are completed.
