Claremont, NH—A fatal workplace accident at a paper mill killed an Enfield man when he was pulled through a massive paper roller. The work-related accident occurred at the APC Paper Mill, located at 129 Sullivan St., at around 9:00 a.m., as reported by the Union Leader.

The Claremont Fire Department was alerted that a worker was trapped in the paper rolling machine, which is reportedly as big as a car. But, when rescue teams arrived he was already pulled from the machine.

The worker, Leo P. Gonyea, 34, was in cardiac arrest and suffering from other “severe traumas” when rescue teams arrived. Gonyea was stabilized at the scene before being rushed by ambulance to Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, at around 10 a.m., Gonyea succumbed to his fatal and traumatic injuries.

Officials said that Gonyea was working alone at the paper rolling machine when the accident occurred. The paper machine is used to “squeeze” the moisture from the paper as it goes through the rollers. It is unknown how Gonyea was pulled through the rollers.

A full investigation into the workplace accident is currently underway. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to investigate as well.
