Hammond IL Industrial Accident: Electrician crushed to death at Unilever plant

Champaign, IL– An electrician was killed at the Unilever plant when he tripped and fell, causing heavy metal cover that he was lifting to crush him to death. The fatal workplace accident occurred on Sunday, May 23, 2010 around 10:00 a.m., in Hammond, as reported by the Post-Tribune.

Authorities reported that electrician Steve Mangona, 61, of Kendallville, was lifting a heavy metal cover with a remote-controlled crane, when he somehow tripped and fell. The cover then came crashing down on him, crushing him to death. On Tuesday, details of the accident were still sketchy.

Mangona was rushed by responding emergency medical services to St. Margaret Mercy Health Care Center in Hammond for treatment. He was then airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. Tragically, the worker died Sunday afternoon.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office stated that his death was caused by numerous injuries that resulted from the crushing weight of the metal cover.

Mangona was reportedly a long-time employee at the Unilever plant.

Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Rapid Response team were at the plant on Monday, conducting a full investigation into the fatal industrial accident.
