Huntsville, AL—An explosion at the Redstone Arsenal left two people injured on Wednesday, May 5, 2010. The chemical explosion reportedly took place around 8:45 a.m., at the sprawling military base in Huntsville, as reported by MSNBC.

Madison County emergency operations coordinator Jim Pockrus said the explosion was a “chemical type” and arsenal officials were “not requesting any help” from city or county rescue crews.

Two people were reportedly injured in the blast. One of the victims was airlifted by medical helicopter to receive medical attention at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, while the other was taken by ambulance to a Huntsville Hospital. The types of injuries they sustained and their current conditions were not immediately known.

Details surrounding the explosion are limited, and the exact cause of the explosion has yet to be reported. But authorities did state that contract workers were removing a propellant, ammonium perchlorate, from rockets when the explosion occurred. The job was described as “highly dangerous work,” according to U.S. Rep. Parker Griffith of Huntsville.

The blast apparently occurred in Building 7352, which is home to a test site that conducts missile and aviation research.

The Redstone Arsenal is reportedly the center of Army missile and helicopter programs, which employs 32,000 people.
