Legal news for product liability attorneys. Gerber® Gator® Machete and Gator® Machete Jr. are being recalled over laceration hazard.

The CPSC alerts product liability attorneys- Gerber machetes were recalled over laceration hazard.

Portland, OR—The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov/ in partnership with Gerber Legendary Blades, a division of Fiskars Brands Inc. have annouced a voluntary recall of Gerber® Gator® Machete and Gator® Machete Jr. Nearly 49,000 Gator Machetes and 6,000 Gator Machetes Jr. were recalled on Tuesday, March, 9, 2010 by the CPSC.

The voluntary recall was prompted after it was recognized that the saw side of the machete can stick in the wood while using the product. If the user’s hand suddenly slips off the handle and slides forwards across the machete blade, it could cut the user’s hand. To date, Gerber has recieved five laceration reports among consumers who used the Gator Machete, in which they all needed stitches. There haven’t been any reports of injuries with the Gator Machete Jr. “The recall involves only the Gerber Gator Machete and Gator Machete Jr. with the original handle. The Gator Machete is approximately 25 1/2″ long and the Machete Jr. is approximately 18 3/4″ long. The blade is marked with the ‘Gerber’ trademark. The Gator Machete and Machete Jr. with a modified handle (an extended hand guard) are not included in this recall. Consumers should visually inspect their machete to determine if it is included in this recall.” The recalled products were sold in retail stores across the nation, which included The Sportsman’s Guide, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Bass Pro Shops/American Rod & Gun, and through on-line stales from March 2007 through February 2010 for the retail price between $16 and $25.

All consumers who have purchased the recalled products are advised to contact stop using the machetes and contact Gerber to receive information on how to get a free replacement machete.

Gerber Legendary Blades toll-free at (877) 314-9130 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday, or visit www.gerbergear.com.
