A Kansas City School District school bus collision killed a girl in Kansas City, KS.

Kansas City, KS—A 9-year-old girl was fatally struck on Thursday, March 4, 2010 by a school bus that was on its way to pick up students for the day. The young girl was tragically killed around 8:30 a.m., at 66th Street and Parkview Avenue, as reported by the Kansas City Star.

The Kansas City Police Department hasn’t determined what caused the Kansas City School District bus to strike the girl in a location where there are no curbs or sidewalks. When police officials arrived at the scene, responding medics reported that the 9-year-old girl succumbed to her fatal injuries at the scene of the collision. Although details surrounding the girls identity has not been released, a student who was on the bus reported that the girl attends school with him at John F. Kennedy Elementary. The school bus also apparently hit a stop sign when it struck the girl, who was also with her sister that managed to avoid being hit. A woman who lived in the area where the accident took place reported that vehicles and buses routinely drive way too fast in that area. The school bus was later towed from the scene around 1:00 p.m., and the students were transferred to another school bus to continue on their way to school. A district crisis team is at the school to help the students’ cope with their loss. A full investigation into the fatal accident is underway. It is unclear if the bus driver will face charges.
