San Antonio, TX—A construction accident severely injured a worker who fell into an uncovered 20-foot shaft on Wednesday morning, February 24, 2010. The workplace accident occurred at the San Antonio College around 7:45 a.m., at the Nail Technical Center in the 1300 block of San Pedro Avenue, as reported by the San Antonio Express-News.

The unidentified worker was reportedly working at the Nail Technical Center when he fell into the uncovered shaft, according to the Alamo Colleges District Police Department. Numerous Vaughn Construction workers reportedly at the site where the unidentified worker fell into the 20-foot hole, which houses a lower concrete platform that stores mechanical equipment. The San Antonio Fire Department’s technical rescue team rushed to the scene to pull the injured man out of the shaft. The worker was reportedly conscious when emergency teams rushed him to Brooke Army Medical Center for treatment of a potential traumatic brain injury (TBI), and a leg injury. Officials stated that it is unclear if the injured man was wearing a hard hat the time, or why a metal grate that cover’s the hole was left open. Vaughn Construction and Campus police are investigating the accident. If was not reported if the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ is conducting an investigation as well.
