Fort Lauderdale, FL (News)—A man suffered serious injuries when he fell three stories down the shaft of an elevator on Tuesday afternoon, February 23, 2010. The near-fatal incident allegedly occurred at Las Olas by the River condominium, located at 520 SE Fifth Avenue, according to information provided by the Sun-Sentinel.

Reports state a car insurance adjuster, whose identity was undisclosed by authorities, and a client were exiting the elevator when the leash of the client’s dog managed to become wedged between the doors. The insurance adjuster proceeded to attempt to open the doors to free the dog, though the elevator was already gone upon him doing so. The insurance adjuster subsequently fell into the elevator shaft, landing three stories below.

The building manager, identified as Bob Rathmanner, reported hearing the man call out for help from inside the elevator shaft, stating, “He was conscious. I think he’s going to be OK.” Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue personnel allegedly responded to the scene to transport the seriously injured man to Broward General Medical Center. The unidentified insurance adjuster reportedly suffered broken bones in the horrifying incident. No charges have been filed in connection with the accident.
