Three people injured during violent explosion in Vero Beach apartment building.

Vero Beach, FL—Three people suffered burn injuries in an apartment complex explosion on Thursday night, January 14, 2010. According to information provided by TCPalm.com, the blast occurred at approximately 10 p.m.

Officials from Indian River County Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene of the explosion where red flames were reportedly coming from inside the building, located at the Sun & Sand Complex in the 900 block of Sandpiper Lane. The destructive incident allegedly occurred after a man tried to help two neighboring residents re-light the pilot light to their gas stove. Officials did not identify any of the injured or displaced residents involved in the horrifying incident.

The resident who lit the pilot light allegedly suffered third-degree burns, covering the majority of his body. The woman sustained second-degree burns on her face, while her husband sustained shrapnel burns in the explosion as well. Both the man helping the couple, and the woman involved were airlifted to an Orlando hospital via medical helicopter. The husband was allegedly transported to Indian River Medical Center to be treated for his burn wounds by doctors and nurses. Fire fighters at the scene reportedly had the blaze under control within twenty minutes of their arrival.

The blast allegedly caused extensivw structural damage, including a roof that was virtually blown off. The inside of that particular unit of apartment complex was also reported badly charred from fire damage, displacing a few residents. Officials from the American Red Cross also responded to the scene to aid those who lost their homes in the violent explosion. Investigators into what may have caused the blast are underway.
