Steubenville, OH—A 3-year-old boy was left alone on a school bus for more than three hours after falling asleep on his way to school on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. The school bus driver apparently did not see the boy when he made his rounds before he dropped the bus off, as reported by WTOV9.
The school bus driver dropped his bus off at the bus lot around 9:30 a.m., and apparently did not see the sleeping boy, who did not get off at Pugliese West Elementary School. The boy’s mother, Samantha Bilyou, called his teacher around 10:00 a.m. to discuss his report card, but she was never asked why her son was not in class. Bilyou even went by the elementary school to drop off forms and still wasn’t questioned by school administrators on why her son was not in class.
The boy, who was alone and crying on the bus, was discovered by the bus driver around 12:45 p.m. when he came back to do his second round. School officials had not notified the boy’s mother of the situation until around 2:00 p.m., nearly an hour and half after the boy’s discovery. The boy’s mother contacted the Steubenville police about the situation and filed a police report. Police officials are investigating the incident.
