Portland, OR—A fiery helicopter crash near the Fern Hills Wetland left two people dead. The fatal helicopter crash happened on Sunday, September 20, 2009, around 1:00 p.m., near Forest Grove, as reported by the Forest Grove News Times.

According to Washington County Sheriff Officials, flight instructor Douglas Doty, 34, of Beaverton, and flight student Thomas Hagner, 32, of Hillsboro were tragically killed after their helicopter crashed and ignited into flames. Witnesses stated they saw the helicopter loose control and plummet to the ground. Witnesses also stated they heard a loud explosion and could see flames and smoke coming from the crash site. The helicopter crashed in a isolated area, about a mile from a paved road, which made it hard for rescue teams to reach the crash scene. A half-hour later, rescue teams reached the crash and stated the helicopter was completely engulfed in flames. Both Doty and Hagner were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by responding emergency medical services (EMS) crews. It is currently unknown who was in control of the helicopter when the aircraft lost control. Washington County Sheriff officers, Forest Grove and Cornelius Police Departments, along with the Forest Grove fire, Gaston Fire, and Cornelius Fire Departments all responded to the fatal helicopter crash. Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) http://www.faa.gov/ are reportedly conducting a full investigation into the crash.
