Des Moines, IA—A professor at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri tragically died as result of the injuries he sustained in a bicycling accident. Donald Myers, 69, a professor of engineering management died on Sunday, July 26, 2009, as reported by Chicago Tribune.

Myers sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) while participating in the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) on Saturday, July 25, 2009. Myers was reportedly riding his bicycle down a small hill and reached a curve at the bottom of the hill, which he was unable to negotiate and crashed. The Des Moines sheriff’s office reported no other bicycle or automobile was involved in the bicycle crash. When area emergency medical service (EMS) crews arrived on the scene of the crash, Myers was found unconscious. The injured bicyclist was airlifted by helicopter to the University Hospital in Iowa City for treatment of his traumatic brain injury. According to attending medical professionals, Myers never regained consciousness. He was reportedly wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Myers has reportedly been an employee at the Missouri S&T since 1979. The RAGBRAI event brings bicyclists together for a 450-mile bicycle trip. It is a non-competitive bicycle ride across Iowa, which draws 10,000 recreational riders from across the United States and overseas, according to Wikipedia http:///www.wikipedia.org.
