Illinois company recalls battery equalizers for fire hazard

Feds recall BattEQ Battery Equalizers for high risk fire hazard.

Chicago, IL(JusticeNewsFlash.com)–Federal regulators with the CPSC and SmartSpark Energy Systems Inc., issued a recall of approximately 800 units of BattEQ Battery Equalizers on June 18, 2009. SmartSpark Energy Systems is a firm based out of Champaign, Illinois. BattEQ Battery Equalizers are under the voluntary recall, because they pose a fire hazard. The recalled products can overheat, causing burns and fires. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) www.cpsc.gov was created through the Consumer Product Safety Act. The CPSC is responsible for protecting consumers from injuries related to consumer products.

BattEQ Battery Equalizers are used to improve the life and performance of rechargeable batteries by balancing the charges of the batteries. The equalizers were made in the United States and sent to retail stores and distributors between July 2006 and March 2009. They sold for approximately $300 each.
No injuries related to the recalled equalizers have been reported. However, there has been one incident in which a BattEQ Battery Equalizer overheated and caused a fire.
