Stem cell research procedure saves brain damaged automobile accident victim

Recent Indian stem cell procedure saves brain injured car crash survivor.

Dallas, TX(JusticeNewsFlash.com)—According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, a division of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) http://www.cdc.gov, there are approximately 1.4 million individuals affected by traumatic brain injuries (TBI) annually. Of this total, 20% of those TBIs were caused by motor vehicle collisions (MVC). In simpler terms, that means about 280,000 of traumatic brain injuries inflicted each year were caused by automobile crashes. A national list of traffic related fatalities from 2007, provided by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) showed that Texas had 3,363 deaths due to automotive wrecks, the highest statistic displayed. These statistics are not meant to convince you that all TBIs, both MVC related and not, resulted in death. 50,000 of the 1.4 million resulted in a fatality but the rest were hospitalized and most likely had to undergo numerous procedures to sustain or regain functionality.

A recent surgery was performed at a BGS Global Hospital in Bangladore, India in which mesenchymal stem cells (found in bone marrow) were transplanted into the patients’ brain. The patient was suffering from a diffuse axonal injury (DAI), an acute form of TBI, as a result of a motor vehicle accident. With this particular type of brain injury, the injured party tends to remain in a vegetative state for some time. This particular patient had been in a coma for three months before the procedure and was experiencing cognitive dysfunction and could not move her limbs. About a month after the stem cell therapy was completed, the patient could reportedly move her limbs, recognize and carry out conversations with her family and friends, and was last, but not least, conscious.

The main neurosurgeon who performed the procedure allegedly mentioned the motivation behind the use of this specific practice was, the fact, that MVC based injuries are increasingly apparent in this day and age. The top neurosurgeon also seemed to indicate this new technology and medical procedure could be a way of helping drivers, passengers, and pedestrians seriously injured in automobile accidents. India, being merely the second country to use stem cells in correlation with brain surgery (after China made the first attempt), seemed very satisfied with the results of the stem cell therapy.
