What is Jackknifing?

According to Lewisville truck crash lawyer Amy Witherite, jackknifing is something that occurs in a number of reported commercial truck accidents. The term jackknifing is used to describe the occurrence of an articulated vehicle like a tractor truck carrying a semi-trailer folding in such a manner that it bears the resemblance of a folding pocket knife. Such incidents may be caused by improper braking or a truck driver attempting to halt a vehicle after a loss of control.

The Dangers of 18-Wheeler Crashes Involving Jackknifing

Commercial vehicles are the largest, most powerful objects on the nation’s roadways. When an accident occurs involving a large-scale vehicle like an 18-wheeler, the damages are typically catastrophic, and injuries sustained by those involved are often severe. Across the U.S. more than 300,000 commercial truck crashes are stated to occur each year. According to the most updated reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2012, the estimated economic costs from truck and bus crashes in the country totaled $99 billion.

“…crashes involving large trucks continue to take a toll on truck drivers, their passengers, other road users, businesses, and the community. Overall, 317,000 motor vehicle crashes involving large trucks were reported to police in 2012, according to the latest Vital Signs report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The estimated cost of truck and bus crashes to the United States economy was $99 billion that same year.”

When jackknifing is an element of a serious truck crash, many lives may suddenly be placed at risk. The loss of control can cause the vehicle to swerve across multiple lanes of traffic, putting drivers and passengers in danger of crashing. Says Texas truck wreck attorney Amy Witherite, “there are anti-jackknife devices that truckers and trucking companies can invest in to help avoid jackknifing in the event of an emergency stop or other circumstance that could lead to a trailer spinning around and facing the wrong direction.” Many don’t however, according to Witherite who states, “there should be an effort on the part of big rig operators to ensure that these machines are equipped to provide the best protection possible from preventative malfunctions.”

The attorney further says that when one is injured in any type of truck accident, it is important to understand what legal options are available for holding those responsible accountable for any damages they are left with such as loss of property or medical expenses for injuries.

The circumstances of the aforementioned accident were still under investigation at the time of the report.
