Colorado – A 19-month-old toddler was attacked by a pit bull after trying to hug the animal. As reported by the Detroit Free Press, investigators say the 90-pound dog attacked the boy Sunday evening while it was tethered to a pole. The child sustained injuries to his face and neck.

Commerce City police spokesman Chris Dickey is quoted as stating to the Denver Post of the attack, β€œThe child went to give the dog a hug, and it latched onto his face.”

Police say charges are pending against the owner of the pit bull, who is reportedly a transient in Commerce City. The breed of dog is illegal in the city.

The pit bull was taken to Adams County Animal Shelter and died there from asphyxiation while being restrained.

The child is expected to survive after sustaining the injuries.
