New York – A New York man convicted of rape after it was disclosed in a college essay written by his former stepdaughter has been sentenced to prison for the crime. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the 62-year-old man was sentenced in a Brooklyn courtroom on Monday to 18 years.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed to protect the identity of his accuser, was accused of repeated rape of his then stepdaughter in 2003, who was 8 years old at the time. She wrote about her ordeal in a college essay nearly a decade later. Her mother called the police after reading the essay.

The former stepdaughter, who was not present in court for the hearing Monday, is quoted as saying in a statement read by Assistant District Attorney Anna Krutaya, “Getting closure and justice on this horrible situation” has been the best that could come from it…I felt like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.”
