Oregon – Legislators in states like Oregon and Tennessee are debating whether to support $0 community college tuition. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), advocates for proposed measures that would allow community college students to attend on the state’s dime say doing so hold benefits such boosting educational attainment for an emerging workforce.

State Sen. Mark Hass, who has spearheaded the no-tuition effort in Oregon, is quoted by the AP as stating, “I think everybody agrees that with a high school education by itself, there is no path to the middle class… There is only one path, and it leads to poverty. And poverty is very expensive.”

Hass says no-tuition policies benefit taxpayers by helping keep many people out of the social safety net.
