Toronto – Police are treating the deaths of two young boys who were killed by a python in their sleep as a criminal investigation. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), preliminary autopsy results Wednesday showed that the boys, ages four and six, died of asphyxiation.

The father of a friend whose apartment the boys had been visiting owned an exotic pet store located on the floor beneath them. The python is believed to have escaped from his enclosure and got into the room where the boys were sleeping after slithering through the ventilation system.

According to police, the snake, an African rock python, was killed by a veterinarian and examined following the tragedy. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Snake expert John Kendrick, a manager at the Reptile Store in Hamilton, Ontario, is quoted by the AP as stating of pythons, “Once they are in constricting mode, any part of their body that is touching something that moves, they’ll wrap it… I’ve seen snakes with two different prey items at the same time, one with the back of the body and one with the front. It could have been an incident like that.”

A vigil was held in the Campbellton, New Brunswick community Wednesday in support of the family.
