Hillsboro Beach, FL—A construction worker was seriously injured when he was impaled by a steel railing on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. The construction accident occurred around 9:30 a.m., in the 900 block of Hillsboro Mile, as reported by the Orlando Sentinel.

According to police officials, a 36-year-old construction worker fell about eight feet and was impaled through his thigh or abdomen. It is unknown what caused the man to fall or if he was wearing his safety harness, as required by laws and regulations.

By the time responding emergency crews arrived at the scene the victim had been removed from the railing. He was conscious.

The victim was rushed to North Broward Medical Center in serious condition.

The man’s identity is being withheld at this time.

Investigations are underway by police officials. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to investigate the accident as well.
