Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for teens with more than 2,100 teens killed and more than 243,000 being treated in emergency rooms for injuries suffered in car accidents in 2013, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Philadelphia car accident lawyer Rand Spear talked about how many teens don’t appreciate the dangers of driving a car on a podcast available on YouTube.

In the summer teenagers are much more likely to be involved in vehicle accidents. Generally those 16 to 19 are nearly three times more likely than drivers aged twenty and older to be in a fatal crash, according to accident attorney Spear, with two-thirds of those drivers being male. Distracted teen drivers are especially dangerous.

“You have to watch out for teens driving with other teens. It’s very distracting when a bunch of kids get in a car, they’re driving around, the radio’s on, they’re talking, they’re texting, they’re just not paying attention. A lot of teenagers are newly licensed drivers. When a new driver is distracted with other teenagers in the car it really is a recipe for disaster.”

According to Spear teens are more likely than older drivers to,

·       Underestimate a dangerous situation whether it’s an intersection, driving at night, when it’s
raining or in bad traffic conditions,

·       Not wear seat belts,

·       Speed, to tailgate and when there are other teens in the car they can be more risky. “They
want to show off and want to show that they’re in control of the situation and oftentimes it
really turns out to be a disaster,” says Spear.

About a third of the fatal vehicle accidents involve speeding, according to accident attorney Spear, and about 25% involve alcohol.

Spear says he was very cautious teaching his son Michael how to drive and wouldn’t allow him to drive in potentially dangerous situations when he was first learning. “I was very nervous, very concerned,” Spear says. An important thing parents can do is teach by example.  “As parents we really need to set the right tone and the right example so that the kids see when Mom and Dad are out to dinner they don’t drink because they are driving. We are responsible and they will they see how we conduct ourselves. Believe it or not that’s really the best teacher of all,” Spear says.

“The real takeaway here, the real key is that when you get behind the wheel of a car to really make sure you recognize that it’s a deadly instrument and it’s something that needs to be treated with respect and with care. At all times you should recognize that in a moment your whole life could change or the life of someone else could change,” Spear says.
