The Most Common Causes of Truck Accidents

According to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over 100,000 people were injured in accidents involving commercial vehicles in 2012 in the U.S. According to a past study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration the leading causes of these types of crashes include:

·      Alcohol and illicit drug use which impacts the reaction time of truck drivers

·      Driving at excessive speeds

·      Distracted driving

·      Truck driver fatigue

Texas truck accident attorney Amy Witherite of the law firm of Eberstein Witherite LLP has said that identifying common causes of truck accidents is an important first step in implementing measures that can reduce the rates of related injuries on a broad scale. Says the attorney “understanding the underlying causes like truck driver fatigue is essential for the development of safety campaigns and trucking industry regulations that promote a safer driving environment for everyone.”

In a previous blog about the issue the attorney noted that “congressional action is also an important focus, and having data to illustrate the reasons there is a need for more industry regulation can be helpful to the cause of getting long fought for safety measures implemented.”

Witherite suggests that individuals who have been injured in a truck crash caused by the negligence or misconduct of a truck driver or trucking company obtain an assessment of their legal options in the event that they have incurred significant damages such as medical expenses or property damage as a result. The Texas personal injury attorney has said in a previous blog about the issue “When plaintiffs have unresolved damages in a truck accident case there are legal options available for moving forward with a claim no matter the circumstances or tactics used by defendants to persuade them that they don’t.”

The investigation into the recent aforementioned truck crash continues. The immediate cause of the accident was not known at the time of initial media reports.
