Texas truck accident attorneys report a truck driver has been charged with manslaughter in connection with a fatal semi truck crash in Saginaw.
A Texas truck driver has been charged with manslaughter in connection with a fatal crash that killed four players on a college softball team. According to reports, officials with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board say the driver did not appear to take any evasive action as his truck veered across a median and hit the North Central Texas College team’s van.

“AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) – A Texas truck driver has been charged with four counts of first degree manslaughter on suspicion of causing an Oklahoma highway crash that killed four softball players from North Central Texas College, court officials said on Friday.”
The crash occurred in September of last year while the team was returning from Oklahoma to Gainesville, Texas. Three members of the “Lady Lions” were pronounced dead at the scene, and a fourth player was taken to a hospital where she later died.

“Murray County prosecutors on Friday charged 53-year-old Russell Wayne Staley, of Saginaw, Texas, with four counts of first-degree manslaughter. Killed in the crash were 19-year-old Meagan Richardson of Wylie, Texas; 18-year-old Katelynn Woodlee of Windom, Texas; 20-year-old Jaiden Pelton of Telephone, Texas; and 20-year-old Brooke Deckard of Scurry, Texas.”

Statistics from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration data show that in 2013, approximately 95,000 people were injured and over 3,900 people were killed as a result of a traffic accident involving a large truck, or those with a gross vehicle weight of more than 10,000 pounds. Of the fatalities in these accidents, the NHTSA says 71 percent of those killed were occupants of other vehicles. Texas tops the list of states with the highest number of large trucks involved in fatal traffic crashes.
According to Texas based truck accident attorney Amy Witherite, the aforementioned case is one example of hundreds of fatal commercial truck accidents that occur in the U.S. each year involving apparent truck driver negligence and lead to charges being filed against them. Says Witherite “sadly in many cases of fatal truck crashes caused by some negligent act of truck drivers, the driver involved had a prior history of engaging in the same type of bad act.”
NHTSA data supports this assertion stating in its Traffic Safety Facts 2013 Data sheet “Nearly 17 percent of all large-truck drivers involved in fatal crashes had at least one prior speeding conviction.” It has not been reported whether the truck driver in the crash involving the college softball team bus had a prior conviction.
Witherite further stresses that in any truck accident where a negligent error by a truck driver is the probable cause, it is important that injured victims, or their loved ones in the event of a wrongful death, understand their legal options in these matters. Victims Witherite says “can recover compensation for any damages they incur as a result of a truck crash for which they are not at fault.”
A dozen other people were also injured in the truck accident involving the North Central Texas College team’s van.
